Line BB - part 1: History page with photo - tells about the development on the line down to Norwegian owned CC winners....
On my internet presentation I have used three pages for the part of the English Line BB where the Norwegian owned CC winners are traced back on. The three Chart Pages are named Line BB part 1, Line BB part 2 and Line BB part 3. The reason for "cutting Line BB in three parts" is to make room for all the information. Still the pages can be a bit slow to open - so please be patient....

As you see from the story below the first known dog on Line BB was the sable dog Butcher Boy (born 1906) and the Line is named from him. On Line BB we have a lot of "branches" which have had special value for the breed in Norway. The Chart below shows that two "branches" coming from Ch Eltham Park Eureka's (Ch 1926) two sons Ch Max of Clerwood and Eltham Park Evolution lead us to CC winners in Norway. All Norwegian owned CC winners (per 2000.12.31.) are linked on their place on the Line Charts (CHE and BB) and can be followed back father, grandfather, great grandfather and so on....back to about 1900.

The dogs mentioned below are pictured on this page:

Butcher Boy's son (Photo 1) Wallace (ex Jean) was sable like his father. It is not much information given about these early dogs but from photo Wallace's head had a rather terrier-look and his ears was rather heavy. The history tells that our breed at that time looked like being put together from a lot of breeds......

From Wallace's two sons Rip of Mountfort, sable (Family 10) and War Baby of Mountfort, sable (ex Teena, collie, Family 10), it is War Baby who gave the greatest influence on Line BB. It was a lot of CC winners in England by Rip but there are none dog-line leading to Norwegian owned CC winners.

War Baby's son Rufus of Mountfort (Family 23) also was a sable. He was CC winner. Rufus became the father of the sable (Photo 2) Ch Specks of Mountfort (his mother was Ko Ko who's mother was the collie Teena, Family 10). These information tells us that Specks was of collie blood both from his sire and dam side.

Having Collie-blood in the veins was not special only for the dogs mentioned above. The breeders had started with a very heterogeneous breed and it was more than "one" who found it necessary to do "something" to make the breed more uniform. From the history of the breed we understand that the dogs must have been smaller in size at that time (before the collie-cross) as they are to day. When the English Shetland Sheepdog Club was founded in 1914 the size variation were from 30,5 to 38 cm. It was mentioned that the type of heads varied from round applehead and triangle head with big variation in height from skull to muzzle. When talking about ears it is mentioned small pricked ears or big ears who nearly was hanging down. It also was a big difference in the eyes shape and colour. Recognized was the body outlook, how to behave and the coat quality .....

The history tells that it is through these Collie-crosses we got the colour blue merle - as this was unknown colour in Shelties. The Collie-cross made an influence on head and expression for generations but it also brought in the size problem.

Ch Eltham Park Eureka

Ch Specks of Mountfort was the father of (photo 3) Ch Eltham Park Eureka (Family 11). I mention the dogs dam site with Family number to emphasize that all Lines and Families are closely linked together. I have found a little story about Eureka who as a puppy was named Peter Pan of Mountfort, and he had been on many hands before he at the age of 9 months was bought by the well known Collie and Sheltie breeder Mr Pierce. He renamed this promising puppy Eltham Park Eureka who developed into a sure winner where ever he was shown. He won at Crufts in 1926 and he won his title in early age. When looking through what's written about him it seems as his faults must have been few - the only thing mentioned on the negative site is that he had a rather short tale. From photo he looks very Collie-like. Ch Eltham Park Eureka showed good results at stud - this is well shown in the English Charts. Tracing back the Norwegian owned CC winners the "branches" coming through Eureka's two sons: The tricolour Ch Max of Clerwood and the sable Eltham Park Evolution.

Ch Max of Clerwood's mother Melitte of Clerwood, tricolour, Family 3, was a results of a litter brother and sister mating (Redbraes Rollo and Redbraes Magda, both tricolour) whose father was Chestnut Rainbow - "Ancestor" on Line CHE. The reason why I'm telling about Line CHE and some of the Families in my presentation of Line BB is like earlier told: To emphasize that all Lines and Families are linked close together.

Ch Max of Clerwood is the great grandfather to (photo 4) Ch Kinnersley Gold Dust (Family 5) "who was a lovely rich red golden sable with a full white collar, a very nice size and balanced all through; a dog that should have won today", as Felicity M Rogers (Kennel Riverhill) wrote in her book in 1974. She told that this dog won best of breed at her first judging appointment.

Gold Dust's son Fydell Startler (Family 12) was a tricolour but had so little white that he nearly was black & brown. He was small and stocky with a lovely head rather like Ch Uam Var of Houghton Hill (Line CHE). Startler was shown before the war and won CC after the war was over which was good going and showed his lasting qualities. He won his second CC in the age of ten years.

Fydell Startler is sire of Ch Helensdale Bhan (photo 5) (mother: Helensdale Gentle Lady, Family 13) - who become a well known name on Line BB. Bhan was a mahogany sable, a small dog and very attractive to look at but not a good mover. Bhan sired three champions and five CC winners. By far his best son was Ch Helensdale Ace (photo 6) who really put his stamp on Line BB - and through his daughters who can be found in many of the Families.

It is a funny story bundled to how Ace "got his pedigree" as the combination was not planned by his breeder. Bhan got out by a mistake and mated his dam, Helensdale Gentle Lady, and the result was only one puppy in this litter - Helensdale Lone Star - who lather was renamed Helensdale Ace. Ace was glamorous personified, in spite of his crooked white blaze. He was the colour of his dam's sire, Ch Nicky of Aberlour, who also had quite a big blaze. Miss Felicity Rogers (Riverhill) writes in her book: "You could pick Ace to pieces as he was full of faults but he'd still come back at you and knock you for six. His personality and glamour were so terrific you couldn't see anything else while he was in the ring. At his first show, when he was only just six months, he won the puppy class. His sire won open but it was Ace who got the CC and his dad had to be content with the resCC."

The English Charts shows that Ace sired 10 CC winners and 10 Champions. Ace was a fiery red with a good deal of white and he passed his colour and markings, including his crooked blaze, on to his sons and daughters. It's told that Ace was monorchid as was the case with so many show dogs and stud dogs under and after the war - mentioned are: Ch Exford Piskiegye Taw (CHE - 9) and Ch Viking of Melvaig (CHE - 9), Ch Orpheus of Callart (BB -16), Ch Riverhill Rikki (BB - 24) ) and Ch Francis of Merrion (BB - 9) (grandson of Ch Helensdale Bhan) who is the father of Ch Heathlow Luciana who is the mother of Ch Jefsfire Freelancer ...

Ace got a most tragic end of his life as he died from an accident poisoning only in the age of seven. His son (photo 7 - below) Ch Laird of Whytelaw (Family 8) is father of N Uch Monarch of Monkreddan who come to Norway in 1964.

Ace's son (photo 8 - below) Ch Alasdair of Tintobak (Family 1) was not a result of a planned combination: The story tells that Ace was as wilful as his father Bhan - the breeder had chosen another stud dog for Mhairi Dhu but Ace made up his own mind and found his way to "pay Mhairi Dhu a visit". The result of this ended up with 6 puppies - and Alasdair was one of them.

Alasdair became the most famous of Ace's sons, he was a rather dull shaded sable but in spite of this he had a great presence, he sired eleven champions. Unfortunately, he had double jointed hocks and could on occasions stand like a Chow. In some degree he passed this on. Riverhill Rare Gold (Family 9) who was the first champion by Alasdair, had some suspect of these hocks but not so marked. Rare Gold become a very important brood bitch and it is told that she didn't pass this hocks on to her descendants.

Through Ch Alasdair of Tintobank's son (photo 9 - above) Ch Trumpeter of Tooneytown (Family 1) we have three "branches" through 1) Midnitesun Good News, 2) Loughrigg Concert Master and 3) Willowstone Willow Warrior, with special value for the breed in our country:
1) Midnitesun Good News is the father of the Norwegian owned Nord Uch Misnitesun Talk of The Town, and the English Ch Midnitesun Justin Time who is the father of the Swedish owned Int Nord Uch Shelfrect Stroller who came from England in 1979. I found him very attractive when I met him at a show in Arendal (in Norway). Time also have shown that he was of great value to the breed both in Sweden and Norway through Swedish Moorwood-breeding. Through Midnitesun Good News son (photo 10 - above) Ch Midnitesun Justin Time (Family 9), two "branches" lead down to imports to Norway and to Sweden. which had great value for the breed in our country. 1) The Swedish owned dog Int Nord Uch NordV'81 Ingleside Copper Image, and through the English dog (photo 11 - above) Ch Shemaur Noel Edmonds (Family 5) who is the father of the Norwegian owned dogs: Blackthorn of Shemaur (tricolour), and N Uch Shemaur Such A Night (sable).

 2) Loughrigg Concert Master (son of Ch Trumpeter of Tooneytown) is the father of Ch Loughrigg Kings Minstrel (photo 12) (Family 24) who is to be found in a lot of English pedigrees. L Kings Minstrel is great grandfather to the Norwegian owned tricolour dog N Uch Bananarama of Kyleburn who was exported from England in 1988.

3) Willowstone Willow Warrior, the third of Trumpeter's sons mentioned above, is the father of the Norwegian owned SF N Uch Willowstone Water Gypsy, who came from England in 1964.

Another of Ch Helensdale Ace sons (photo 13 - below) Ch Hazelhead Gay Wanderer (Family 13) is yhe father of (photo 14 - below) Ch Penvose Brandy Snap (Family 13) who is the father of (photo 15 - below) Ch Riverhill Ratafia (Family 5) who is the father of (photo 16 - below) Ch Rodhill Burnt Sugar (Family 3) who is the father of (photo 17 - below) Ch Riverhill Ricotta (Family 9) who is the father of (photo 18 - below) Ch Haytimer of Hanburyhill at Hartmere (Family 1) - who in turn is the father of two Norwegian owned/English bred dogs: The tricolour N Uch Philhope Shoestring and the sable Int Nord Uch Franwick Sarachen at Hartmere. Ch Haytimer of Hanburyhill at Hartmere was also grandfather to the English exported Norwegian owned bitch Erjon's Vivienne (The Herald of Herds ex Erjon's Opera Singer, Family 9) who won her first CC in 1997.

The story above tells about the dogs on one of the "branches" on Line BB - here named Line BB part 1 - who lead down to Norwegian owned CC winning dogs. The other "branch" of Line BB - here named Line BB part 2 with a link to Line BB part 3 - goes through Eltham Park Evolution (son of Ch Eltham Park Eureka who was made up in 1926).

When going from one Line-pages to the other it can take some time for the pages to open - so please be patient.....
